The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee met on April 13.
The meeting minutes are as follows.
Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m.
1. Middle States Update
Dr. Geehan explained that Joe Stenard was tasked with getting the final version of the proposed Self-Study Design document converted into a PDF to send to Dr. Bonfiglio, our Middle States liaison. Finally, the huge accomplishment of completing the Self-Study Design document (80 pages) and sending it to Dr. Bonfiglio was met! Both Geehan and Stenard thanked and congratulated the Committee for their input in creating a quality Self-Study Design.
With the Self-Study Design documents done, Geehan highlighted the fact that the group would focus on moving forward. The group discussed this concept and noted next steps they could begin working on shortly. The virtual visit by Dr. Bonfiglio on April 27 was the next milestone.
Geehan also discussed the following important assessment and Middle States-related topics.
2. What You Need to Know about Student Outcomes and Why
Program Outcomes
The group discussed Program Outcomes such as transfer, employment, certification, licensure, etc.
Program Learning Outcomes
The committee discussed the Program Learning Outcomes vs Course Learning Outcomes, and how they worked together.
SUNY General Education Outcomes
The group discussed the SUNY General Education learning outcomes, the proposed changes, and how they cross over the ISLOs below.
Institutional Student Learning Outcomes
The group spent a most of the meeting reviewing the ISLOs in detail and providing feedback on them as they stand now. Much of the discussion centered on equity, particularly that students from underfunded high schools (including students from underrepresented groups), whose critical thinking, communication and reasoning skills are not well developed, enter college, the workplace and other stages of adult life at a great disadvantage.
The topic of Assessing the Assessment will be addressed at a later meeting in fall 2021 or spring 2022.
