The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee met on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The meeting minutes are as follows.
Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m. The meeting began with a Middle States Update. The 2019-2020 Assessment Cycle was discussed, as was Nuventive. Meg Mann offered to help anyone who needs it by giving them a rundown on how to use the website or make edits in it. This would mostly apply to those who are department heads, as they would need to make updates to the page for their own departments.
The topic of populating the committees and making them more diverse was also discussed. Ainsley Thomas brought up the lack of representation of people of color on committees at HVCC. This began a discussion of how to reach out to multiple communities on our campus and inquire about their interest directly in regards to being on committees. If individuals, such as people of color, are contacted directly to be invited onto a committee, or asked what committees they would be interested in sitting on, they are much more likely to feel included by the campus community and to really want to join a committee. Whenever possible, it is best to reach out to the individuals who may be interested in the committees with a personal email, message, or phone call. Being more inclusive in our committee membership will also help Hudson Valley’s retention since having the voices of various underrepresented groups on the committees can help ensure the school is more open to diverse groups and that the activities they want to see exist on campus.
To better disseminate news of committee activity, a page for each committee may be created on Nuventive, such as each academic department on campus already has. Meg Mann may be able to help those who want to get their committee profiles set up.
The meeting adjourned at 2 p.m. The next meeting will take place on Sept. 29.
Subsequent meetings are Oct. 13 and Nov. 3.
