Available student seats in EOP

What is the Educational Opportunity Program (E.O.P.)?

To our small office’s surprise, there are several employees on campus that do not know what the EOP does or is. Here is a small introduction of what you should know about our program and what rumors we can debunk.

What is EOP?

EOP is the Educational Opportunity Program. It is a NYS grant-funded program that allows students who are academically and/or financially at risk to receive additional academic and financial support services. It is a selective program and Hudson Valley Community College only accepts 119 students total into the program.

Are the EOP and EOC the same thing?

No. The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is located on the Hudson Valley College Campus in the Siek Campus Center, Suite 120. We are an entirely separate program from the Educational Opportunity Center, however many of EOC students have applied to our program.

So anyone who needs more financial aid should come see you?

Well, not exactly. There are eligibility guidelines and an application process to be accepted into the program. If the student meets the eligibility criteria they will be accepted into our program. Many of our students are already offered a tremendous amount of financial aid based on their family income. EOP offers a small stipend that fluctuates between $100-$300 and is given directly to the student to help offset any additional expenses (gas, groceries etc.) to retain them as a student at the college.

You have students that want to transfer into an EOP at a four-year college, so you’ll send them to us before they graduate…

SUNY EOP guidelines say that a student must apply to the EOP during their FIRST semester EVER in college. In order for a student to be eligible at the four-year institution, the student must have been enrolled as an EOP Hudson Valley Community College student first. If they miss applying during their first semester then they are no longer eligible for the rest of their academic endeavors.

What services are offered in EOP?

I’m so glad you asked! We have a wonderful tutoring staff in the areas of Biology, English/Writing, and Math. Our students are able to receive exclusive individual and group tutoring directly in our office. They have their own school counselor for the duration of their time at the college to help them navigate the college experience. A computer lab and suite to work on homework and study. A small stipend that is given out to the student at midterm. Free school supplies are available to our EOP students. Leadership opportunities in the EOP Club that affords two student leaders the opportunity to attend a national leadership conference annually.

We currently have seats available in the program and think students are just not aware of the opportunity. Our office asks that you pass on the above information when working with your students. Here is the link to our supplemental EOP application: http://www.hvcc.edu/eop/application.pdf.

If you would like further information regarding EOP, you may call Jaime Miller, EOP counselor, at x(518) 629-7399.

Please feel free to stop by our office suite in CTR 120 (by the ping pong tables) to have a tour of the suite and ask questions.
