Baseball Team Whips SCCC in Game One, Second Contest Called Due to Darkness

The baseball team (11-11) defeated Schenectady County Community College (11-7) in game one of a Tuesday doubleheader, 12-1. The second game was suspended in the eighth inning — tied at seven — due to darkness.

In game one, Mark Tietjen (Oneonta/Oneonta) got the win on the mound striking out seven batters and allowing only one run. He received strong run support from both Nick Papas (Maple Hill/Castleton) and Tyler Young (Shaker/Latham) as they went a combined 7-7 with nine RBIs. Papas was 4-4 at the plate with a three-run homerun and six RBIs, and Young went 3-3 with three runs scored, a double, homerun, and three RBIs.

The Vikings gave up a two-run lead in the seventh inning forcing extra innings. Luke Burns (Delaware Academy/Bovina) and Sean Geisel (Guilderland/Guilderland) were both 3-5 with an RBI before the game was called due to darkness. Tim Murdick (Averill Park/East Greenbush) struck out 10 batters in the no decision.

The Vikings host Schenectady this Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Joe Bruno Stadium.
