Be prepared! Safety tips for the upcoming cold snap

Attention students, faculty and staff,

Be alert to the upcoming cold snap that’s bringing frigid weather later in the week. Temperatures will be below zero this weekend and all of us should be aware to the dangers of extreme cold and other safety issues.

Please be extra careful when using space heaters; only use UL approved space heaters. Also, be on the look out for black ice on walkways, etc.

General Safety Tips:

  • Minimize travel
  • Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel
  • Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts
  • Check on the elderly
  • Bring pets inside
