Blackboard Tip of the Week

Bb 9.1 October 2014

Here is a Blackboard Tip of the Week for faculty who use the Student Preview feature in their Blackboard courses (How do I use this tool?):  simply put, it is highly recommended that you tweak the settings for Student Preview so that your previewuser and data are retained after you exit from Student Preview.

It is especially important to do this if you use publisher content (McGraw-Hill Connect, Cengage, Pearson, Wiley, etc.) that integrates with your Blackboard course (for example, grades for assignments in your M-H Connect course download into columns in your Blackboard Grade Center).

Why? If you have integrated publisher content, assessments, etc., you need to be able to see from a student’s perspective that that publisher material is functioning correctly. In order to do that, your previewuser must be enrolled in your publisher course site, which can only happen if your previewuser is permanently enrolled in your Blackboard course. And you can only get that result if you change your student preview settings in Blackboard so that your previewuser and data are retained.

Here is a quick review of the steps for doing that.  First, select the Enter Student Preview button that appears to the left of your Edit Mode toggle control:

Next, to retain your previewuser and data, do the following:

As an additional recommendation, you should change your student preview settings before you integrate publisher content with your Blackboard course(s).
