Bb 9.1 October 2014
A Bb tip from the beginning of this semester focused on the close interrelationship between course due-dates and Global Navigation in our current version of Blackboard (Bb 9.1 October 2014), and emphasized the importance of setting due-dates for any items (tests, assignments, discussion boards, etc.) for which that option is provided (Due Dates and Global Navigation). This week’s tip highlights due-date functionality that many faculty may be unaware of: the ability to prevent students from starting a test whose due-date has passed.
Here’s how it works: when you set or edit the test options for a test in your course, and navigate to the Due Date section of the Test Options window, you will see a new check-box option below the control for setting the due-date. See the following screenshot:
Once you select this option, your students will be able to take your test only before its due-date. If they attempt to start the test after its due-date, they will get the following message:
Of course, you can get the same result by setting a Display Until date for your test. However, if you instead use the new due-date option, you will reap the additional benefit of knowing that those of your students who rely on Global Navigation for notifications about pending due-dates will receive the timely heads-up that they expect and need.
