Blackboard Tip of the Week

When grading tests or viewing test scores in your Blackboard Grade Center, you often come across a student’s test attempt that is displayed (with the pencil-and-paper icon) as being in progress.

The in-progress icon can indicate several things: either the student is still in the process of taking the test; the student has been bumped out of the test (due to a connection disruption, etc.); the student took the test, but neglected to submit it after finishing it, or you had the test set to auto-submit after a specified amount of time and the student exceeded that time-limit when taking the test. If any of these situations occurs in the context of a multiple-attempt test, the in-progress icon will appear, even if a student has successfully submitted other attempts on that test.

Typically, if a student gets bumped out of a test after only partially completing it, you can release that student’s test attempt so that s(he) can take it again. However, it can also be the case that the student completed most or all of the questions on the test before getting bumped out, timed out or having forgotten to submit that test. In these situations, the student may prefer to have the test attempt count, rather than have to take it again. Fortunately, Blackboard provides you with the option of submitting a test attempt that is in progress.

Here’s what you do:

  1. In your Grade Center, select the Down Arrow button for the cell that contains the in-progress icon and then select View Grade Details from the menu that appears.
  2. In the Grade Details window, select the Grade Attempt button for the test attempt that is in-progress.
  3. Select the Test Information link on the top-left of the test page and select Submit Attempt to submit the test attempt.
  4. Select the Save and Exit button to save the test submission and return to the Grade Details window and then select the Return to Grade Center button to return to your Grade Center.

Important note:  it is a good practice to wait until after the due-date for a test has passed to submit an in-progress test attempt (use the following link to view the complete tutorial on how to edit graded tests:  Show Me). This is because, unless a student has indicated to you that s(he) has been bumped out of a test and has requested that her/his attempt be released, the student may actually be in the process of taking the test and would not want to have her/his attempt submitted while s(he) was still taking it.

As always, please feel free to contact the Distance and Online Learning Office (629-7070/ DLHelp@hvcc.edu) if you have any questions about this.
