Last week’s Blackboard tip of the week focused on using rubrics in situations in which students are receiving ongoing grades for their work on assessments such as blogs, journals or wikis (Read the Tip).
On the other end of the scale, did you know that you can also associate a Blackboard rubric with individual test questions? This is a new feature in Blackboard and it can be very effective, for instance, if you have test questions that require a lengthy and detailed response, or that involve multiple steps (such as essay, short-answer or file-response questions), and for which you want to provide your students with clear performance guidelines.
Associating a rubric with an individual test question involves creating a new question, or editing an existing question; selecting the rubric that you want to associate with that question (or, alternatively, creating a new rubric to associate with the question), and selecting the way in which you want your students to view the rubric. The following links point to detailed tutorials that walk you through the various steps in this process:
- Creating Rubrics
- Editing Test Questions
- Associating Rubrics with Essay, Short-Answer, or File-Response Questions
Here is a quick, illustrated guide to those steps.
First, you go into edit view for a new or existing test question, which brings up the Create/Edit Question window:

You then navigate down the page to where it says 3. Rubrics and select the Add Rubric button:

Next, you choose Select Rubric from the drop-down menu that appears (or you can select Create Rubric, if you wish to create a new rubric to associate with the question):

In the Select Rubrics window that opens, you select the check-box for the rubric that you want to use, and then select Submit:

Under 3. Rubrics, you select the button below where it says Show Rubric to Students, and then select a viewing option from the drop-down menu that appears (the options are: Yes (With Rubric Scores), Yes (Without Rubric Scores), and After Grading):

Finally, you select Submit to confirm the association of the rubric with the test question.
