Blackboard Tip of the Week

Here is a short, but tried and trusted, Blackboard tip for faculty who are preparing to teach one of the Late Sprint courses that start on Monday (March 17):  after doing an export/import from an older course into your Late Sprint course, be sure to save to your local computer or network drive a copy of the export file that you imported.

This is particularly important if the export file came from a Late Sprint course that you taught in Spring 2013, since that course will only remain available to you for 30 days after your 2014 Late Sprint course starts; if you neglect to save a copy of the export file, you will not be able to save a copy once that 30-day period has ended.

In any case, you should always save export files from your courses that have just ended, as you will need the content from those export files for the subsequent sections of those courses that you teach. For a refresher, use the following link: Export Your Course.

In a related vein, you also should always create archive files of courses that have just ended, and save copies of them to your local computer or network drive (How do I do that?). Why? The archive file represents a complete historical record of your course, one which contains all of the work that your students did in that course, and preserves all of your students’ grades and grading feedback. An archive file can only be restored by ITS, but it is invaluable to have a copy of in the event — to pick one example — that a student contests a grade that s(he) received in one of your courses, and it becomes necessary to restore that course to its complete state in order to view a comprehensive record of your student’s work and grades.

The following links point to tutorials on related “tasks” that you will want to carry out when a course ends:
