Capital Region Parrot Society seeks volunteers

The Capital Region Parrot Society,  a registered 501(c)(3) charity that provides rescue and re-homing services for parrots and other exotic pet birds, is looking for volunteers. The organization generally takes in, rehabilitates and re-homes about 100 birds per year with a primary foster location in East Greenbush not far from Hudson Valley Community College.

The organizatin seeks one or two volunteers who can assist in the care of our foster birds.   Duties would include feeding and caring for the birds, changing papers and assisting in the cleaning of the aviary and quarantine areas. Volunteers also would have the opportunity for a hands-on, crash course in parrot handling and overall avian understanding. (The East Greenbush foster location also is a private home where more than 10 different species of socialized parrots — from finches to macaws and cockatoos — reside.)

This volunteer opportunity would not only be great for persons interested in exotic birds, but for persons interested in animal advocacy in general. Exotic birds are the third most popular pet species in the US, yet whenever there are situations of cruelty and abuse, authorities and SPCA’s often don’t have a clue what to do since most of the animals they’re called upon to assist have “four feet and fur.”

If you are interested in this opportunity or more information, please contact Robert Lewis of the Capital Region Parrot Society at bob@ringobirds.com.
