Soft skills are personality traits and behaviors that allow you to successfully communicate and collaborate in a work environment. Hard skills are competencies that are learned through training or education such as accounting or automotive technology.
Although there are many soft skills, most can be grouped in these categories:
- Communication (clarity, confidence, respect, empathy, active listening)
- Problem-solving (observation, persuasion, brainstorming, decision making)
- Initiative (self-starter, proactive, persistent, active learning)
- Adaptability (calm, open-minded, responsive to change, optimistic)
- Work ethic (responsibility, initiative, dependability, self-motivated, professional)
- Teamwork (conflict management, appreciating the perspective of others, accepting feedback, coordination)
Soft skills can be strengthened with practice and are transferable to any job — not every position requires accounting skills, but every position requires communication skills.
Learn more about these skills and how to enhance them during a Center for Careers and Transfer Information Session on Tuesday, June 2 at 3 p.m.
