Celebrate Herman Melville’s birthday on Saturday, July 29

On Saturday, July 29 at 10 a.m., the Lansingburgh Historical Society (LHS) celebrates Herman Melville’s 198th Birthday. The annual celebration takes place at the Melville House, which is located at 2 114th St. in Lansingburgh.

The event features a 10:30 a.m. lecture by Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Ph.D., author and noted Melville authority, who is an associate professor at the University of Connecticut. She will present, “An Alchemist of Words: Melville’s Use of Sources.” In addition to her academic work, Dr. Bercaw Edwards is a licensed US Coast Guard Master of Near-Coastal Auxiliary Sail Vessels of not more than 100 tons. She circumnavigated the globe aboard the 38-foot ketch, “Natasha,” 1971-1975.

Light refreshments and birthday cake are served following the lecture. The Melville House’s third floor museum and second floor apartment are open to tour. Herman penned his first two novels in the apartment’s front bedroom.

A donation of $5 for members and $6 for not-yet-members, is appreciated and will help the LHS to provide more education and preservation activities.
