Cell Phone Etiquette

Cell phones are an important part of our modern, technology-driven workplace that require important usage etiquette. No doubt, all of us have been annoyed by inappropriate cell phone use at one time or another, and perhaps have made a few gaffes ourselves.

In an effort to make an optimal connection with your colleagues or students, here are several tips for cell phone use in the workplace:

  • Focus on the person who should have your attention.
  • Avoid using your cell phone during meetings.
  • Don’t have your cell phone visible at business events, such as lunches/dinners, or even meetings.
  • Silence your device and ask other meeting attendees to do the same.
  • Have a professional ring tone.
  • Avoid accessing and answering your cell phone while engaged in conversation.
  • During meetings, avoid “reading under the table” or texting/emailing while others are speaking.
  • Take personal calls in private, and avoid arguments or personal calls at work.

Here are some examples of leaders who enforced strict cell phone rules:
During President Barack Obama’s tenure, cabinet members were required to leave their cell phones in a basket before entering the meeting room. Former French President François Hollande banned cell phones from his cabinet meeting, as did former British Prime Minister David Cameron.
