As we all prepare to resume classes, we want to take a moment to update the campus community regarding students with disabilities and offer guidance to faculty.
Last week, the Center for Access and Assistive Technology (CAAT) sent an email out to all 700 students registered with the CAAT asking them to remind faculty of their accommodations. As always, you should receive forms from the student indicating their approved accommodations before providing adjustments. If you have a student stating they should have accommodations but have not yet received their accommodation form, please ask them to send you their form and/or refer them to caat@hvcc.edu.
If you have a student that requires extended time for tests/quizzes, please consult with the Distance Learning Office on campus to set that up correctly in Blackboard.
If your student has the accommodation of a reader, please refer them to our CAAT website on Assistive Technology. The website contains a link with instructions on how to download Kurzweil 3000 Read the Web which they can use to read their online course content.
If students communicate to you that they are having issues with the download or any other concerns regarding accommodations, please refer them to the CAAT at caat@hvcc.edu and we will assist them.
Support for Faculty
The Center for Access and Assistive Technology is happy to introduce Deque University to the campus community! As we move to an online presence it is important that you consider students who use assistive technology to access your courses. As an institution of higher education, we have an obligation to provide accessible course content.
SUNY has graciously provided all SUNY institutions with a one-year membership to Deque University. Deque U provides self-paced training courses on accessibility for online settings. The courses are free, you simply sign up to get started. The courses run from beginner to advanced and are geared for faculty, staff and IT professionals. Information about the program is located on the CAAT webpage: CAAT Faculty Resources.
If you require support or have questions regarding accommodations for your students, please reach out to us at (518) 629-7154 or via email: caat@hvcc.edu.
