Though choosing a career can feel overwhelming, especially when there is a very real cost involved (tuition and time commitment) it’s also a time to embrace the opportunity to tune in to you!
Career exploration involves many steps: researching professions and industry trends, understanding the job market and employment projections, informational interviewing, and job shadowing among others. While these are important, one of the first steps in the career exploration process is self-assessment.
The college’s Center for Careers & Transfer staff recommend that students begin career planning with a self-appraisal by taking time to identify and evaluate:
- your interests — Do you love music or computers, or both?
- your natural abilities — Do friends and family go to you for fashion advice or for help with writing?
- what makes you happy — We tend to be more successful when we are happy in our work.
- your values — What are your priorities when thinking about your future job — work environment, compensation, service to others, etc.?
Choosing a profession is a process, one that is impacted by a number of factors unique to each of us, and for some ongoing throughout life. Wherever you are in this journey, the Center for Careers & Transfer staff members are here to help along the way.
