Virtual interviews have been around for years, but they are now much more common due to social distancing requirements. In addition to practicing your responses to commonly asked interview questions, review the steps below to prepare for your virtual interview

  • Test the technology ahead of time: download the software and practice how to use it before the day of the interview.
  • Prepare your interview area:
    • Have good lighting. Ideally, the light source should be in front of you.
    • Use a blank wall as a backdrop. If you can’t, choose one with minimal distractions and make sure what the employer sees is neat.
    • Reduce background noise by closing window, turning off the TV or music, and phones.
  • Be ready: Have your resume and the job description nearby. Use sticky notes to keep “talking points” where you can see them. Don’t click around on the computer during an interview.
  • Use good body language: Sit up straight and look directly into the camera. This is tricky because we tend to look at the person on the screen. You may want to practice.
  • Dress for success: Dress as if you were there in person. Even remote, it’s still a professional opportunity.
