Chambers, Pesca, and Pompey to moderate discussion on March 11

Professors Tamu Chambers and Carmine Pesca will be joined by Roy Pompey of the Collegiate Academic Support Program to lead a discussion based on the film “Slavery by Another Name.”  The event is Wednesday, March 11, at 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (2nd Floor) of the Marvin Library Learning Commons.

The trio led a lively discussion last week, blending sociology, history, criminal justice, and education in a frank look at the legacy of slavery and the emergence of the industrial prison complex as a new form of slavery after the Reconstruction period and passage of the 13th amendment. The film sheds light on a little known period of American history when convict leasing was practiced at significant economic benefit to owners and at tremendous cost to convicts, many of whom were falsely or unfairly imprisoned.

The discussion is another in the Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle program series organized by the Dwight Marvin Library. The film “Slavery by Another Name” may be viewed in its entirety on the PBS website. All are welcome to the discussion either before or after viewing the award-winning documentary.
