Navigating Codes, Standards & Practical Experience in GSHP Design

Even though early ground-source heat pump systems were introduced in the USA over 80 years ago, building standards and codes have not adequately addressed this technology, providing necessary guidance to designers, installers, and the permitting authorities…until recently. An overview of the current ‘state of the industry’ will be presented with commentary about where improvements are still needed.

Burying Mistakes: When a GSHP Designer Trusts but Does Not Verify

Geothermal design engineers should be actively engaged in their projects from conceptualization to commissioning in order to ensure that the intent of their designs are fulfilled and operating as planned. It is very important for an engineer to oversee the beginning of construction after receiving a building permit by participating in meetings, submittal reviews, site inspections, and system start-up. The risk of delegating this responsibility to others has many implications including the possibility for litigation.

Presenter Lisa Meline P. E. is a licensed professional engineer and Certified Geoexchange Designer who also participates in the development of codes and standards for the GSHP industry. She brings her depth of practical design and construction management experience in these three terrific sessions focused mainly on commercial scale projects.
