Poetry Out Loud, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.
As an art form, poetry predates literacy. Orally recited or sung, the form became one of the most reliable ways cultures could remember and pass on oral histories, stories, genealogies, and even the law. Every culture has poetry and song. Poetry Out Loud builds on that history by inviting the dynamic aspects of more recent poetic forms, such as slam poetry, spoken word, and theater, into the literary classroom.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with US state arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, an initiative that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
