In cooperation with local salons, students Smyrna Pena, Alicia Mariano, Kim Hanley and Kyle Colangelo-Garcia spent a day at the Albany Medical Center Ronald McDonald House Room on May 9 to provide a variety of services to the mothers and caregivers of those attending the TLC day.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for the cosmetology students to apply their classroom knowledge to an event that brought joy to everyone, certainly those who received services and also to the EOC students, who felt a great sense of contribution,” said Dr. Lucille Marion, Vice President at Hudson Valley Community College and Executive Director at the EOC.
On May 16, 12 contestants from the EOC’s Cosmetology class participated in a hairstyling competition. Students spent weeks preparing a themed hairstyle on manikin heads for entry in three categories: a Bread and Butter category, which featured everyday commercial salon styles using only rollers and pin curls, a Romantic Fantasy and an Extreme Fantasy category.
Winners are as follows: Bread and Butter Category — 1st place, Helen Win, 2nd place, Kyle Colangelo-Garcia, 3rd place, Elizabeth Phillip-Little; Extreme Category Romantic Division — 1st place, Ashley Mishook, 2nd place, Kim Hanley, 3rd place, tied Sharde VanZant and Kyle Colangelo Garcia; Extreme Category Fantasy Division — 1st place, Tiniqua Chavers, 2nd place, Alicia Mariano and 3rd place, Elizabeth Phillip-Little.
The competition, organized by Assistant Professor of Cosmetology Doug Ivey, a 1984 EOC graduate, allows students to showcase their best hair designs on standard manikin heads.
The following local salon owners, managers and cosmetologists judged the competition: Virginia Berrios owner of Perfect Cut Salon in Albany and EOC graduate; Art Ward, EOC graduate and a cosmetologist at Perfect Cut Salon; Debbie Penneso, manager of Fantastic Sams in Brunswick; Cheri Lee, cosmetologist at Fantastic Sams; Jade Gibson owner of Jade’s Hair Envy in Albany; Kevin Swart, cosmetologist from Serendipity in Schenectady; Angela Nicols, cosmetologist from Make Me Fabulous in Ballston Spa; and Tek-Nik Beards, owner of Tek-Nik Traveling Scissors Hair Salon in Troy.
Students from the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center Cosmetology program provided manicures and paraffin hand dips to mothers with children being treated for cancer as part of the American Cancer Society’s Hope Club TLC Day earlier this month.
