Words of Wellness

While the Wellness Center’s Counseling and Wellness Services are available Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for counseling, consultation, and referral needs, via phone or through Zoom, we wanted to share additional resources that may be beneficial.

On Wednesday, March 17th, we will discuss wellness. As we continue our way through the Spring semester, it is a great time to focus on our wellness and find ways we can integrate wellness activities into our daily routines. Wellness can be defined in many different ways. The National Wellness Institute (NWI) defines wellness as “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” The following resources from the National Wellness Institute highlight six dimensions of wellness and ways for us to attend to these various areas of wellness in a holistic encompassing lifestyle.

Link to a flyer discussing the Six Dimensions of Wellness.
By applying the six-dimensional model, a person becomes aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to healthy living. This holistic model explains:
- How a person contributes to their environment and community, and how to build better living spaces and social networks,
- The enrichment of life through work, and its interconnectedness to living and playing,
- The development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view,
- The benefits of regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, strength and vitality as well as personal responsibility, self-care and when to seek medical attention,
- Self-esteem, self-control, and determination as a sense of direction,
- Creative and stimulating mental activities, and sharing your gifts with others.
Counseling and Wellness Resources also wanted to share handouts we developed that further discuss each dimension of wellness and the offices on campus students may utilize to further engage in each dimension of their wellness. These handouts can be found on the Counseling and Wellness Services website, to view click here, or at the links below!

Guidelines for a Wholeness Reflection Exercise.
During the 2018 National Wellness Conference, keynote speaker Dr. Joel Bennett discussed the “Audacity of Wholeness” and asked participants to complete the wholeness exercise AND share their experience with others. Both steps (internal reflection and safe sharing) are key. As part of this exercise, participants watched the message from Howie Mandel linked below.
Please feel free to share these instructions with others.
1) Download and Complete the Wholeness Reflection Exercise.
2) Share the exercise with a friend or colleague.
3) Click here to watch Howie Mandel’s video and ask your friend to do so as well.
4) Take turns sharing your thoughts.

Use the NWI’s Wellness Focus Survey to assess a person’s level of fulfillment in each of the Six Dimensions of Wellness:
- Occupational Dimension: the personal satisfaction and enrichment in one’s life through work
- Intellectual Dimension: the creative, stimulating activities that lead to learning, personal growth and sharing of one’s unique gifts with others
- Emotional Dimension: the awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings and capacity to manage behaviors related to one’s emotional state
- Social Dimension: the contribution to one’s environment and community
- Spiritual Dimension: the search for meaning and purpose in human existence
- Physical Dimension: physical self-care and health-enhancing behaviors
