Prepare your fully online or hybrid Blackboard course for the migration to D2L Brightspace
This Fall 2022 semester we all will be preparing our Blackboard course content for migration to the new D2L Brightspace LMS in the SUNY Digital Learning Environment. We don’t actually migrate or build in D2L Brightspace until Spring 2023, but it will be necessary to move your courses into dedicated migration shells if you want to bring them over to D2L Brightspace. Smart preparation will not only make this migration more successful, it will provide many opportunities to use powerful new tools effectively in the new environment. And it will save you a lot of time and frustration.
What is the migration process for moving from Blackboard to D2L Brightspace?
In the chart provided in the link below, you can see that this Fall 2022 we will combine our courses into dedicated migration shells, back them up and clean them up, and organize them to fit nicely into the new environment. (Some sample migration preparation tasks are listed in the chart but there are many more tips and tricks you will want to know about.)

What are these Migration Preparation Workshops all about?
These first workshops are designed for fully online and hybrid faculty who have fully developed courses that will be migrated to the D2L Brightspace LMS. We will spend an hour showing you how and why you should modify content for migration, and then another hour will be open for questions and getting started in your courses. The workshops will be on Zoom and F2F in BTC 1042 (BTC 1033 lab).
Future workshops will focus on web-enhanced courses and remote courses, and the needs of those faculty using Blackboard less robustly.
Additionally, Zoom workshops will be recorded and edited for use as documentation and checklists made available to everyone.

What we will cover in the workshops:
- Locating and using the migration shells provided
- Backing up content and files, and storing offline and/or in OneDrive
- Combining all versions of a course into one migration shell — how and why!
- Modifying the migration course content to make it more compatible with D2L Brightspace and facilitate faster rebuilding using new tools (bulk editing tools, grade center wizard, drag and drop course builder)
- Glimpses of what it looks like in D2L Brightspace if you don’t clean up and modify your migration course
- Tips and tricks for successful migration strategies
What we will NOT be covering in these workshops:
- Basic web and network navigation skills: knowing where you are, where your files are, how to get there, etc.
- Browser functionality: opening new windows and tabs, right-clicking, locating URLs, etc.
- File management: uploading, downloading, finding, organizing, copying, pasting, etc.
- Using HVCC MS OneDrive: cloud, local client, linking, sharing, permissions, using in the LMS, etc.
If you need assistance with these foundation skills, please contact the Center for Professional Excellence and arrange to work with a mentor. Having a solid comfort level with these skills will be important for backing up your course content, migrating to the new LMS and understanding how to successfully navigate in D2L Brightspace.
