Day Care Outreach Project recruits parents with children in area care centers

In a continuing effort to boost enrollment, the day care outreach project recruits parents with children at area child care centers. Primarily geared toward parents who may be unemployed, underemployed, or with limited marketing skills, the strategy, coordinated in collaboration with area child care centers, provides on-site information sessions at area centers.

Many day care center administrators have contacted the college requesting information on degree and certificate programs to share with parents during parent meetings, or to simply distribute to parents when they pick up their children. There are many parents who believe they do not have the time or resources, or simply are not sure what they want to study, according to Louis Coplin, vice president for Student Affairs. “Some think it’s too late to earn a college degree, or feel intimidated because of age, income or feeling under prepared because of the number of years away from the classroom.” The day care outreach project is designed to help those looking for new opportunities, options and direction to enhance their quality of life. Recently, tabling opportunities were offered at the Albany Community Action Partnership and the Nathan Lebron Early Learning Center, both in Albany.

With over 100 licensed day care centers in the Capital District, the goal is to have a presence at each one. “It’s important to be creative and innovative in our effort to introduce new students to the abundant academic programs the college offers,” Coplin said.
