A Series of Events in Celebration of Young Children!

The Education and Social Sciences Department and The Education Club cordially invite
members of the college community and the community at large to join our celebration of the Week of the Young Child.
All are invited to attend one or more of the scheduled events.

All presentations will take place via Zoom and are free of charge.

Wednesday, April 14 — 6 to 7 p.m. (via Zoom)
Why Teach? Thinking About Teaching
Facilitator: Christine Saxe (Email c.saxe@hvcc.edu for a Zoom link to access the program.)
Presenter: Casey Jakubowski, chair, HVCC’s Liberal Arts and General Studies Department
Dr. Jakubowski, international author and presenter, will lead participants in finding their “Why” through stories, challenged assumptions and critical reflection. Teaching is a critical profession and the reasons someone enters the field can be varied. This workshop will be a time of reflection.

Dyslexia: How to Help the Struggling Reader

Presenters: Kathy Jensen, Roberta Read and Lisa Fine, educational  specialists
Learn about the newest research and practice to help the struggling reader from three experienced experts. Find out what dyslexia is and learn about a wonderful new program to help students, called Alphabetic Phonics.

Working With Children of Divorce
Facilitator and Presenter: Carla Gleason, HVCC faculty member

Working with children of divorce: How to approach education with care and compassion.
This workshop will contain information based on current research regarding the special issues that children of divorce might face. Many times it is difficult for students to concentrate on academics when they are experiencing sadness, guilt or anxiety. This workshop will contain current research and techniques that can be used by classroom teachers, school counselors, and assistants to help develop strategies for improving educational performance for these students.
