Dexter Bishop inducted into Capital Region Football Hall of Fame

Dexter Bishop, a campus security officer in the Public Safety Department, was inducted into the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame during a ceremony and banquet held Aug. 5 at the Polish Community Center in Albany.

Bishop’s football career included his years at Lansingburgh High School (1967-1970) and Hudson Valley Community College, as well as time with both the former World Football League and National Football League. He also had a 30-year career as an official with the Capital District Football Officials Association. The City of Troy recently named Bishop the city’s All-time Athlete of the past five decades.

Bishop was a middle linebacker and running back for the LHS Knights. He was tapped “All City” in each of his three-years — sophomore, junior and senior — as a varsity player and helped the team win the Colonial Council Championship in 1969. At HVCC, he played strong safety and running back, and returned punts and kickoffs. Following college, he had try outs with the World Football League’s Memphis team and the American Football League’s Houston Oilers (today’s Tennessee Titans), where Bishop ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash. He was with the Oilers for two seasons and returned home to play for the Albany Metro Mallers.

Bishop was joined at the event by Terry Buchanan, campus security officer; Jim LaGatta, emeritus vice president for Administration, and Public Safety Director Fred Aliberti.
