The Center for Distance and Online Learning will be conducting several workshops during the Fall 2020 semester. Please review the training opportunities and registration details below and check our Training Schedule for regular updates. If you have any questions about any of the training opportunities, please contact Elissa at e.baker@hvcc.edu.
Pedagogy of Effective Course Design and Delivery — Online Instructor Training
The online instructor training workshop is for faculty who will teach either fully online asynchronous courses (no set meeting time) or hybrid classes (limited real-time meetings online or in-person) in Spring or Summer 2021. Faculty meet remotely for two hours each week for seven-weeks to learn tools and strategies, and in between class sessions, they build out their courses. At the end of the workshop, the class build is complete, and an OSCQR rubric is done to ensure best practices. The course is then sent to the DC for review and approval.
Training will begin the week of Sept. 21 and continue for seven weeks.
Registration Deadline: Sept. 17

- Customized fast track training is available for faculty with advanced technology skills, heavily web-enhanced experience with Blackboard, or other advanced knowledge, as well as anyone who is scheduled to teach late-start fall 2020 courses.
- Because we only meet for two hours each week, trainees will design and build their course on their own time between meetings. (SUNY research has determined that it takes, on average, about 150 hours to develop an online course.)
- Instructional content for learning to develop an online course is available in the Pedagogy of Effective Online Course Design and Delivery training course on Blackboard. All trainees will be enrolled, enabling 24/7 access to instructional materials needed.
Training is complete when:
-
- the instructor has fully completed a course build, with all structures in place and most or all of the content (changes and revisions are often made after training)
- the OSCQR Rubric is completed
- the DC has been notified that training is complete and the DC course approval form is requested
The PEOCDD course features ADA compliance policies and protocols, Universal Design, general accessibility training, and online Best Practices from SUNY and international research. We included all of these in our workshop because of increased legal activity in educational technology and student access to higher education environments. Our training also includes materials that reflect recent national and statewide initiatives in Universal Design.
Blackboard Basics — Remote Instruction Training (Getting Started with Blackboard)
The Blackboard Basics workshop prepares faculty to use Blackboard in their face-to-face (F2F) or remote online synchronous (set meeting time) courses. Using Blackboard with your classes can range from providing students with easy access to course documents, grade book, or by integrating new approaches to teaching and learning by using online tests, online assignment submissions, or online discussions. Faculty meet remotely for one hour each week for seven weeks to learn tools and strategies, and in between class sessions, they build out their courses.
Training will begin the week of Sept. 21 and continue for seven weeks.
