David Van Aken, assistant professor in the History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences department, and his family recently donated a 40-foot blue spruce from in front of their Schenectady home to New York State to serve as its 2014 Christmas tree on the Empire State Plaza.
After David’s wife, Kathy, sent pictures of the tree to the NYS State Office of General Services, an OGS representative visited their home and selected the tree for placement on the plaza.
It was a bittersweet day for the family on Nov. 12 when a crew came to cut down the tree, an event that attracted local media coverage:
All are welcome to attend the tree lighting festivities on Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Empire State Plaza. The activity-packed day gets underway at 1 p.m. and culminates with the tree lighting at 5:15 p.m., followed by fireworks!
