ESOL tutor needed; you can help a future HVCC/EOC student!

Many of you know that I work with refugees from Burma. As a Literacy Volunteer, I teach English and help them prepare for their US citizenship test. I have a handful of teenagers and adults who want to further their education (hopefully here at HVCC or EOC), so I am always looking for volunteer tutors.

Tial is a 32-year old wife and mother of two, who works full time. English is her THIRD language. Tial recently passed her citizenship test (see photo below), has a high school diploma from Burma and is eager to improve her English so she can enroll in the EOC’s Nursing Assistant program. She works hard and is determined to succeed. She is seeking a local ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) class in addition to private help.

If you have an hour and a half a week to share with Tial to help her improve her English, please give me a shout (629-7036 or p.karis@hvcc.edu). You needn’t be a professor; basic conversation and assisting with ESOL homework will be a great help.

I regret that I can’t work with Tial myself, but I’m starting graduate school this fall and hosting an exchange student from China!

I have been working with this group for over two years and I can say it is such a joy. If you want to have a great cross-cultural experience and help improve the life of a terrific woman, this is your gig!
