‘Tis truly the season for fellowship with the new Honors College cohort! In the midst of a busy academic schedule and adjusting to the college life, the students have been enjoying the social life as well. Recently, students engaged in fun, festive activities including making delightful holiday wreaths, partaking in a fabulous Friendsgiving potluck and helping to prepare for the annual Troy Turkey Trot.

The students spent a crisp, sunny morning on Nov. 11 at the Majestic Tree Farm in Selkirk. Under the guidance of Honors College student Tyler Lischak, they cut white pine greens off of branches to be used in various farm projects. They also bundled pre-cut balsam fir pine to create gorgeous holiday wreaths. The students were then treated to warm, toasty grilled cheese sandwiches lovingly prepared by the owner of the farm, Nanette Mayes.

On the evening of Nov. 17, students celebrated a spectacular Friendsgiving dinner at Albany’s Newcomer School. It is a unique school with over a dozen first languages spoken, many refugee families and a truly welcoming environment. Students helped with serving the scrumptious potluck dinner and engaging in fun arts and crafts activities with the children. Honors College student Paige Sanford delighted the guests with her delicious homemade apple pie. A special thanks goes to Dr. Catherine Willis, professor of Sociology and Every Campus A Reguge (ECAR) coordinator at HVCC,  for inviting the students to participate in this memorable event.

In preparation for the upcoming Troy Turkey Trot, students spent the frigid morning and early afternoon on Nov. 18 at LaSalle Institute helping pack and deliver registration packets. Honors College student Andrew Lee, a recent LaSalle graduate, took on the task of bringing a fantastic group of volunteers to make the work seem as effortless as possible. Students helped with packaging the bibs and shirts and then delivering them to the cars at the drive-thru packet pickup stations. They successfully helped hundreds of registrants that day, exemplifying their strength in coming together as a cohesive unit.
