Faculty, library, students connect via videoconferencing thanks to Instructional Technologies

Faculty member Dr. Dianne Zielinski is teaching General Psychology via Interactive Video Technology (IVT) this semester to high school students from Indian Lake, Gilboa-Conesville, Andes, and Morris Central Schools. The class allows the students to get college credit and also to get a taste of what college classes are like before they graduate from high school. This year, her class is composed of 16 students who attend remotely and 14 Hudson Valley students who attend in person on campus.

As part of the course content and to help students get a sense of the campus experience, Dr. Zielinski asks each high school to visit campus during the semester. Students visit Public Safety to receive their ID cards, take a tour of the campus and grab a bite to eat.  Dr. Zielinski also worked with Professor Bob Matthews to create a presentation on collecting journal articles utilizing the Hudson Valley Community College Library web site.

Students who attended the class earlier this fall in the Flexible Learning Space computer lab located in the Marvin Library were able meet their fellow students face-to-face for the first time instead of seeing them on a screen in classrooms designed for distance learning in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center. Since not all of the high schools could be on campus, Instructional Technologies staff member Eric Kiel utilized desktop videoconferencing software to connect to schools who could not attend.  Matthews led the class in a step-by-step tutorial on how to use the library site to search for articles, and though they were in different places, students at both the college and the high school sites were able to see, hear and participate during the presentation.

If you would like to conduct a virtual field trip, conduct meetings or bring a guest speaker from across the world into the classroom via videoconferencing, please contact Eric Kiel of Viking Video Technologies at e.kiel@hvcc.edu or 629-7625.
