Faculty: Register for the Intro to OER workshop

In June 2017, SUNY announced campus funding incentives to encourage adoption of open educational resources (OERs) as alternatives to traditional textbooks. SUNY action was prompted by a New York State legislative budgetary allocation made earlier in the year to address the affordability of college attendance.

Hudson Valley opted to participate and received a modest award to encourage faculty adoption of OERs. Last year, more than 60 faculty participated, resulting in OER textbook adoption in more than 30 courses. Based on this success, the college received additional SUNY funding and is continuing the initiative this year.

The College offers the following to faculty who did not participate in Year One:

Interested faculty may attend a three-hour workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the conclusion of Faculty Workshop Day activities. Space is limited to 50 participants. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will indicate if they intend to propose the adoption of an OER for a course they will teach before August 2020. Those who complete the workshop are eligible for a $100 stipend (intention to adopt an OER is encouraged but not required).

To participate, faculty must first obtain permission from the department chair and then complete the online registration. Workshop registration will close on Wednesday, Feb. 20, or when seats are filled, whichever is first.

If a waiting list develops, priority for attendance will be given to full-time faculty affiliated with departments which offer general education courses, in alignment with SUNY priorities for OER adoption.

After the workshop, support will be available to identify, evaluate, and select OERs eligible for the SUNY incentive. A more detailed proposal, providing the course number, OER(s) selected, and agreement to additional requirements, must be completed and submitted to the library’s OER Review Task Force by Friday, May 10. Proposals will then be approved by the respective department chair and verified as adhering to OER criteria. Faculty who complete a proposal that is approved and verified are eligible for an additional $400 stipend, to be paid no later than June 28. Details regarding proposal development will be reviewed at the Feb. 27 workshop.

The workshop will provide additional background, including sources for OERs, support for content development, evaluation and selection of OERs, requirements for participation, current state of OER adoption at Hudson Valley, and opportunity for questions and discussion. For more information about the workshop and OER initiative, visit the OER subject guide maintained by the Dwight Marvin Library.

Questions about the OER initiative, the workshop or related activities may be directed to Brenda Hazard, library director and SUNY OER institutional lead.
