Faculty/staff collaboration results in article for publication

A collaborative project undertaken by five faculty and staff members will culminate with the publication of their article, “College Student Feedback About Librarian-Created Instructional Videos: Why Aren’t They Using Them?,” in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Library & Information Services in Distance Learning.

Dianne Zielinski, part-time faculty, History, Philosophy and Social Sciences; Robert Matthews, professor, Dwight Marvin Library; Cynthia Koman, assistant professor, Dwight Marvin Library; Eric Kiel, instructional technology support technician, Viking Video Technologies, and Katherine Jezik, assistant professor, Dwight Marvin Library, worked together on a project to survey students about their use of librarian-created instructional videos.

The abstract for the article:
Library instructional videos provide a way to enhance instruction. At a community college, librarian-created videos offered academic support to students, but were not used often. In this study, an online survey asked students to rate a video on APA (America Psychological Association) citation to ascertain why the videos were not being used. Participants rated various video features, including length, technical aspects, narration and style. Students overwhelmingly responded that the videos were useful, but they did not know where to find them. The major complaint regarding the videos concerned technical aspects. Students reported that they were more inclined to ask for help after watching the video.
