Thank you, President Ramsammy, for sharing the message of “IOU — It’s On Us” at the All College meeting on Feb. 3.
“IOU-It’s On Us” is a grassroots movement of men stepping up to be allies in the fight against sexual harassment in sports.
84% of female runners report being harassed while running.
24% of women report quitting or changing their gym memberships due to harassment.
This is unacceptable.
As men, we owe it to women to put a stop to this. Men are the cause of this problem. Men must provide the solution.
“IOU — It’s On Us” asks all men to wear some article of pink when working out or exercising.
The purpose is twofold. Primarily, it signals that we will be an ally to the women around us. We will provide assistance when we recognize harassment. Additionally, wearing pink serves as a reminder to us as men to check our own behavior. “Did I just cross the line between noticing a woman entering the room and staring at her?” “Am I invading her personal space while waiting for my turn on the exercise equipment?” We need to ask ourselves these types of questions, and be aware of how our actions are impacting those around us. It’s a simple but effective practice.
“IOU — It’s On Us” is on Facebook (www.facebook.com/IOUitsonus) and on Instagram (www.instagram.com/IOUitsonus).
Please follow these pages and spread the word, especially to the men and boys in your life. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about IOU — It’s On Us.
It’s On Us to end sexual harassment!
Thanks!
