Fine Arts Professor Thomas Lail exhibits “22022”

Thomas Lail, professor in the Department of Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media, is currently displaying a miniature exhibition —  “22022” —  at Smallbany Gallery, a scale-model exhibition space based in Albany and curated by artist Katie Chwazik. The exhibition is viewable on its Instagram feed @smallbany.

But this week, “22022” can be seen in person when it travels to the Albany Center Gallery at 488 Broadway in Albany. The pop-up Smallbany Gallery installation runs from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 24-26).

Lail writes about “22022” and Smallbany Gallery: Flags and maps are models. Lines drawn across pictures of the world are here refigured as ad-hoc banners and standards to be raised by post-peak castaways. Each unfurled banner might signal a repeated hope for our viral moment… a utopian dream. Or a dystopian nightmare? Maps, domes, and the streaming garland stars of fading borders and nations of passport stand in for stories and dreams, but now find themselves encircled by rising tides and viral beachheads… anxious projections of Global Weirding. Smallbany Gallery is a 1/12 scale gallery and installation space that is focused on Albany and Capital Region artists with occasional guest artists from further afield. Smallbany Gallery Curator Katie Chwazik added: This is a space to show work in a different way, and we hope it provides an opportunity for artists to work creatively without spending large amounts of money, time, and space on a life-scale installations. Work small, think big!”

From @smallbany: Just hanging out with some aerial views of “22022” on 2/22/22! We’re enjoying the stars reflected all over the gallery in today’s sunlight, and with so much going on in the world, reflecting on maps, borders, and symbolic actions.
