The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery host two tours and a Family Scavenger Hunt in August. Proceeds of events hosted by the all-volunteer organization support the preservation and maintenance of the historic Earl Chapel and the beautiful grounds of Oakwood Cemetery.
Saturday, Aug. 11 — 9 a.m. — New Tour!
MIND YOUR Ps & Qs
Volunteer guides lead the way to Sections P and Q, an area in the lower, west portion of the cemetery for the first time. You’ll hear captivating stories about early German immigrants, a Gold Rush prospector, the startling death of a local bookseller and the history of some Civil War soldiers. The Soldiers’ Plot, the Baby Plot, and the old vault are included in this walking tour.
Please call (518) 328-0090 to register and pay upon arrival, $15 per person. (Children under 12 are free.) Most tours are rain or shine, but check Facebook (Oakwood Cemetery Troy NY) if weather is a concern. The group assembles at the flag pole outside the Earl Memorial Chapel and then drives to the tour site.
Tuesday, Aug. 14 — 6 p.m.
FAMILY SCAVENGER HUNT
The Friends’s popular Scavenger Hunt ventures into new territory at Oakwood Cemetery this year and costs only $10 per family, payable upon arrival. Two levels of clues will be given for older and younger children, and every child who completes the hunt receives a prize. This event is always a fun and educational evening for the whole family. Dress for the weather. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants meet at the chapel flagpole and caravan to the hunt location.
Please register in advance at (518) 328-0090 to ensure enough prizes will be available for all children who attend. Leave a phone number when you register so you’ll be updated about any schedule changes and/or check the Friends Facebook page: Oakwood Cemetery Troy NY.
Monday, Aug. 27 — 6 p.m.
TWILIGHT TOUR
This is a great opportunity to see the Oakwood Cemetery in the early evening and hear fascinating stories surrounding the many monuments for Civil War generals, the founding fathers of Troy, and some interesting residents newly added to our tour. Highlights are Uncle Sam’s grave, the Earl Chapel and the panoramic overlook at sunset! If the sky is clear, a full moon should be visible at the close of the tour.
