The NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act requires manufacturers of covered rechargeable batteries to collect and recycle rechargeable batteries statewide at no cost to consumers.
Most rechargeable batteries contain toxic metals that can be released into the environment when improperly disposed. Since June 2011, consumers have been able to return old rechargeable batteries to retail stores.
Trash disposal of rechargeable batteries is against the law; this disposal provision just went into effect on Dec 5, 2011.
