The GenEd/ISLO Committee met on Sept. 28; the meeting minutes follow.
Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 9 a.m.
This was the first meeting of the GenEd/ISLO Committee for the fall 2021 semester. The meeting was held in a classroom with a Zoom component.
I. Greetings
Dr. Geehan noted that the SUNY GenEd Program revision process and approval was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and an agreed upon version was not completed in time for the SUNY Board of Trustees’ July 2021 meeting. It is slated now for the November meeting. Comments, concerns, suggestions, etc. are due to the SUNY Provost by October 22, 2021.
II. Middle States update and Gen Ed/ISLO role in process
Dr. Geehan gave a brief Middle States progress report and talked about how important the GenEd/ISLO process is for student learning, particularly for Standard III.
III. AP/UP process update: incorporation of Gen Ed results and update on ISLO assessment (program learning outcomes)
The current (2020-2021) Assessment Plan and Unit Plan update process has started, and the college is in its second year of formally measuring the ISLOs. There is a lot of crossover with the current SUNY GenEd outcomes. As proposed at this time, the ISLOs will be Core Competencies in the SUNY GenEd program. It was acknowledged that we have some revision work to do on the Diversity/Inclusion and Social Justice Competency.
It is important to Middle States that they see that we are acting on our Assessment Plan results to continuously improve student learning outcomes, including when the criteria for success are met. We want as many students possibly to be successful.
IV. Annual General Education/ISLO Report with DC reports from “owners” of GenEd courses (template)
Dr. Geehan reminded everyone that if they are an “owner” of a GenEd Course, to please fill out their Templates. These are included in the annual GenEd/ISLO Report.
V. Proposed General Education Revision
a. Preliminary comparison of current Knowledge and Skill areas and proposed: The SUNY proposed revision was briefly reviewed including a set of bullet points for each knowledge and skills area, and competencies explaining what skills students should be able to demonstrate upon graduating. Also briefly addressed were the overall requirements for AA, AS, AAS, and AOS programs along with the information that a Task Force was being formed. It is chaired by Dean Geehan and AVPAA Ronalyn Wilson and members will be from Academic Affairs, the Registrar, and the Institutional Effectiveness office. The timeline for this process is entering students in fall 2023.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 a.m.
