Honors College Students Learn About Entrepreneurship

On March 26, Derek Martin, Executive Director of the HVCC Foundation, gave an inspiring presentation to Honors College students titled: “Why Entrepreneurship?”. Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying a business opportunity, taking the initiative to organize and manage resources, and assuming the risks involved in order to create and grow a new venture or enterprise. Derek highlighted the keys steps of entrepreneurship which include creativity, risk-taking and action. The process involves effective communication and strategic thinking, which are core skills the Honors College students work diligently to develop. In fact, the service projects the students complete in their second year at HVCC involve building these skills and teach them how to apply them in the real world.

Derek also shared various examples of successful entrepreneurs and what inspires them. Bill Lia, CEO of Lia Group, believes that entrepreneurship allow society to evolve by using the creative drive to turn ideas into reality. Patricia Fusco, CEO of Fusco Personnel, recognizes that entrepreneurship allows the opportunity to partner passion and hard work to create one’s own destiny. Dan Walters CEO of Robert Slack Realty, notes “Entrepreneurship is the great equalizer to family status, education and traditional workplace opportunities.” Each of these leaders exemplify the power of creating a legacy and making a difference in the world.
