Hoosick Falls third graders visit campus

The Hoosick Falls Central School District third grade class had a great time visiting campus on Tuesday, March 5. The group of approximately 75 students enjoyed a tour of campus with four different stops.  Students visited Fitzgibbons for a demonstration in the nursing simulator lab and then a demonstration from Karen DuJack and some Dental Hygiene students on teeth brushing. They also went to the Science Center for a presentation from Assistant Professor Julie Friot on how to become a scientist, and they saw and learned about models of human organs. Last, the students visited McDonough and joined Assistant Professor Sheila Zotto in a Zumba lesson.

After the tour, Professor Beth Ernest, Associate Professor Linda Lim and many Engineering Science students facilitated an engineering lesson. The pupils worked in groups to build bridges using paper towel rolls, newspaper and masking tape.

The Hoosick Falls students, as  well as their teachers and chaperones, had a difficult time identifying which activity was their favorite, but all areas received at least one vote! Quite a few students said they are coming to Hudson Valley for college.

Many thanks to Karen, Julie, Sheila, the Nursing and Dental Hygiene departments and their students for donating their time to make the tour meaningful and fun for the group. Also, thank you to Beth and Linda and their students for leading this large group through the bridge building activity for the fourth year in a row. Finally, thank you to staff from the Center for Careers and Transfer, Admissions, the Center for Access and Assistive Technology, the Wellness Center and Student Activities for helping facilitate the event and providing tour guides.
