Since 2001, fires have destroyed an area of land larger than the state of California in the American West. Beyond the devastating impacts of the fire itself, winemakers must understand how smoke exposure on grapes will affect the quality of wine from this important region.
Join the HVCC Chemistry Club on Monday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. in SCI 385 to view an American Chemical Society webinar entitled “How Wildfire Smoke Impacts the Quality of Wine,” and learn how understanding certain chemical and biological processes will help grape growers and winemakers consistently produce high quality wine, even if wildfire exposes their grapes to smoke.
You will learn what compounds are associated in smoke and smoke taint in wine; how smoke taint compounds end up in wine; and how individuals perceive the aroma and flavor of smoke.
While not required to attend any of our meetings, all HVCC students (and faculty/staff) are encouraged to stay up to date with all HVCC Chemistry Club information by enrolling in our Brightspace organization:
1. Log into Brightspace.
2. Choose “Discover” on the Navigation bar.
3. Search for “HVCC Chemistry Club”
4. Click on the tile text.
5. Select either the “Enroll in Course” or “Request Access” option.
6. Once your request has been approved, you will see the HVCC Chemistry Club option in your HVCC Organizations section.
