Hudson Valley participates in Community Cookout held at the Center for Social Justice

Hudson Valley Community College participated in the Center for Social Justice’s fourth annual Community Cookout on Saturday, Aug. 10. The event featured representatives from several community organizations, and was held at the center’s offices at 220 Green St. in Albany.

Louis Coplin, vice president for Student Affairs, said the program presented another great opportunity to recruit students who are interested in enrolling in college or to take some courses. “There were lots of good questions about the types of degree programs we offer, the 24-credit hour program, cost to attend, and the transferring to four year colleges and universities,” Coplin said.

The community cookout is one of many new outreach initiatives the college is involved with according to Coplin. On Aug. 8, the college was invited to participate in a community town hall meeting at the Church of God of Prophecy on Madison Avenue in Albany, and on Saturday, Aug. 17, the college will participate at the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church’s (Albany) College and Career Day. Both opportunities are products of the Inter-Faith Community Forum that Chief Diversity Office Ainsely Thomas coordinated on campus in Spring 2019.

Many businesses, community centers, and faith-based organizations are interested in having presentations of our academic programs and educational opportunities, according to Coplin. “It’s very important that we continue to partner with organizations that provide essential services to the general public.”
