The 2023 Greater Capital Region STEAM Exposition was held at South Colonie Central High School on May 20. Students from local high schools presented unique projects based on applications in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Two teams of judges evaluated the projects, including from HVCC: Danica Nowosielski, professor of Chemistry; Ronald Vero, professor of Computer Science and Mathematics; and Lamyaa Hassib, director of the Honors College.
Students presented their experimental design, explained the data collection process and discussed their results. Projects were evaluated on creativity, collaboration, connections, research, inquiry and overall communication of their work. The first place prize was awarded for a fascinating project studying how the amount of proteins crayfish consume affects their ability to react to acidification. Other projects of honorable mention included the study of how the structural and biochemical changes correlate with evolutionary effect scores in TBCK Gene Missense Variants, and another project that demonstrated the complexity of implementing a novel design for a cooling bike helmet. The energy and enthusiasm the young researchers exhibited as they presented their work was simply fantastic. The GCR STEAM Expo is a phenomenal opportunity for students to showcase their passion to explore further and is a testament the power of “learning by doing”!
