Americanah, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is the story of love and race centered around a young couple from Nigeria facing difficult choices and challenges in the countries they call home. Nigeria is under military dictatorship and people are leaving the country wherever possible. Ifemelu departs for America to pursue her studies, and Obinze  finds himself in post-9/11 life in London in a dangerous and undocumented existence. They reunite years later in a newly democratic Nigeria and face the toughest decision of their lives.

Monday, Nov. 21 / 2to 3 p.m.
Boston Girl is a coming-of-age novel by Anita Diamant about family ties and values, friendship and feminism told through the eyes of Addie Baum, a young Jewish woman born in 1900 to immigrant parents. Growing up in the North End of Boston, Addie’s personality and intelligence take her to a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture and opportunities for women. An 85-year-old Addie tells her life story to her 22-year-old granddaughter, who has asked, “How did you get to be the woman you are today?”

All are welcome. Reading the book(s) in advance of the meeting times is optional. You may find yourself, however, inspired by historical detail and emotional resonance portrayed in each and you may end up reading one or both!
