RISSE is on the move! Its location in Albany is expanding, with new spaces for administrative offices and classrooms. The mission of RISSE — Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus — is to equip refugees and recent immigrants to build sustainable, independent lives. They offer language and literacy instruction, as well as support with life skills and integration into U.S. culture and community.
Volunteers from the HVCC Honors College and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society worked on a series of location projects as part of the expansion project. Together they helped move furniture, clean and set up classrooms and office spaces. Students volunteered over two days and accomplished a great deal of work. Many hands truly make light work, and it was great to see the spaces transform so beautifully. Special thanks to Rumi Varkar, the volunteer coordinator at RISSE, and Dr. Catherine Willis, ECAR coordinator and adjunct professor of Sociology at HVCC, for helping to coordinate these efforts.
