Falls remain one of the top reasons people are injured each winter. Many falls are related to slippery, unsafe walking conditions and the recent barrage of winter storms and plummeting temperatures have caused icy walking conditions across the Northeast.
Despite the tireless and repeated efforts of HVCC Physical Plant employees, ice- and snow-obstructed walkways still present a common hazard on campus. To this end, the department of Environmental Health and Safety would like to remind everyone to use their best judgment while walking around campus and follow these recommendations:
1. Wear weather appropriate footwear.
2. Use special care when getting in and out of vehicles.
3. Do not walk while using a phone or while carrying items that reduce your ability to see the ground in front of you.
4. Scan the path six or more feet ahead of you for trip hazards.
5. Walk slowly and take small steps. Walking slowly will help you maintain your balance.
6. Plan ahead and give yourself sufficient time to get where you need to go.
7. Watch out for black ice when walking.
8. When entering a building, be sure to wipe your feet. Removing snow and water from your footwear will reduce your chance of slipping when walking around inside. It will also help keep others safe from unexpectedly walking through a slippery puddle.
9. If a route appears unsafe, pick a different route.
Please continue to reach out to the Physical Plant and the department of EHS to inform us of unsafe conditions on campus. Additionally, please be patient with our snow removal efforts. Depending on the severity of storms and temperatures it may take 24 to 48 hours to fully clear all travel paths.
