Ice hockey to be discontinued in 2017

As a result of declining participation at the NJCAA level, Hudson Valley Community College will discontinue its sponsorship of ice hockey as a college-sanctioned sport, effective June 1, 2017. Our current student-athletes will have full support of our Athletic Department and the opportunity to compete throughout the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years, pending continued NJCAA sponsorship of the sport.

Currently, the NJCAA oversees just six ice hockey teams in the nation, which is two below the minimum number required for competition. The NJCAA is allowing ice hockey to operate under the auspice of an extension, however, there are only three other teams in the northeast resulting in limited competition for our program.

Hudson Valley has proudly offered ice hockey since 1991. On behalf of the college, I greatly appreciate the leadership of Coach Matt Alvey and Athletic Department staff members for their leadership and dedication to our students and the ice hockey program at the college. Without a doubt, hundreds of student-athletes have been positively affected by their efforts and unwavering commitment to the sport and our team.

Please support our student-athletes as they begin play this fall. The first home game is Friday, Nov. 6 against SUNY Cortland Club at 7:30 p.m. at the Robert M. Conway Ice Rink, located in the McDonough Sports Complex.
