Important Information: Fire Emergencies & Alarms

Important information you should know about fire emergencies and building evacuation:

When the building alarm sounds:

  • Evacuate the building immediately
  • Instructors will oversee the evacuation of their students
  • Don’t assume it is a fire drill or false alarm!
  • Take your personal belongings – if it is a real emergency, you won’t get back in for some time
  • Leave by the nearest exit
  • Close all doors behind you

If you observe smoke or fire:

  • Go to the nearest fire alarm pull station (located in all hallways) and pull the handle
  • The building alarm will sound – evacuate the building
  • Once safely outside, report what you observed to Public Safety
  • If you smell burning and you think it is coming from the light ballast, turn off the light and call in the problem to Physical Plant 7356

Other fire emergency & evacuation information:

  • The closest exit may not be the one you are accustomed to using.  Look for the exit signs for other ways out.
  • Go into an adjoining building to exit.  All buildings have structural fire separation.  This may be especially helpful to persons who have mobility impairment – elevators in adjoining buildings will be operational and can be used.
  • On your way out, turn off coffee pots & other heating elements, re-cap chemical containers, shut down machinery and close the door.
  • If you observe anything important related to the emergency, report this to a Public Safety Officer or the Fire Department as soon as you get outside the building
  • Fire extinguishers, located in many areas of the buildings, may be used for small fires, if it is safe to do so and you know how to operate an extinguisher.  Never use more than one extinguisher on a fire.
