Important Information from Public Safety

Students,

As we begin the new semester, I wish to welcome you and remind you of some important safety and parking tips.

Driving To/From Campus

  • Be alert to the students walking to/from College Suites, the student apartments at the top of Morrison Avenue at Route 4. Pedestrians in a crosswalk always have the right of way!
  • Public Safety recommends approaching campus from the south (I-90) on Route 4, especially during the peak morning rush hour. Drivers coming from I-787, up the Morrison Avenue hill, will encounter more traffic and delays with back-ups onto the Menands Bridge. Likewise, when leaving campus, make a left onto Route 4 to avoid congestion getting to the bridge and I-787. Access to I-90 is only about two miles in light traffic.
  • Each year at the start of the fall semester, there are often several minor accidents on the Troy Menands Bridge because traffic can slow quickly and drivers are not paying attention. Please drive defensively and obey the speed limits, especially when approaching the bridge if you cross it on your commute.
  • Please drive carefully at all times; slow down and avoid distracted driving. The use of cell phones without hands-free devices is illegal and frequently causes accidents. Texting while driving also is illegal and extremely dangerous.

On Campus

  • The speed limit on campus is 15 mph. Please slow down and drive carefully (including when backing out of parking spaces). Campus Peace Officers, as well as local police, will issue tickets for all moving violations.

Vehicle Registration

Parking

  • Parking is in high demand during peak times, however ample overflow parking is available across the street from campus on Route 4 and South Road (behind Panera Bread).
  • Also, Public Safety staff will direct drivers to other overflow locations, depending on demand. DO NOT park on curbs or lawns, unless directed to do so by Public Safety staff.

Parking Garage on South Road

  • Nearly 500 spaces are available to students in the parking garage along South Road.
  • Students are prohibited from parking in faculty/staff areas on Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the parking garage.
  • During busy periods, Public Safety officers will guide students to an overflow parking area in Level 4.

General Guidelines

  • Please park in legal areas! Do not park on grass, sidewalks, or block other cars.
  • Be considerate and patient as fellow students, faculty and staff share parking and campus roadways.
  • Do not park in the Hudson Valley Plaza /Price Chopper lot across Route 4. You will be towed!
  •  Parking for individuals with disabilities (with a hang tag or license plate designation) are available across campus in each lot and in the parking garage.
  • Motorcycle parking spaces are available on the first floor of the garage (west side), and in B lots on the north side of campus.

Be Safe – Both On and Off Campus

  • Please lock your car and be alert as you exit your vehicle. Be aware of your surroundings while walking on campus. A safe environment is the college’s top priority, but everyone is encouraged always to be vigilant and contact Public Safety (518-629-7210). If you see something, say something.
  • Secure valuable items such as lap-top computers and smart-phones.
  • Report thefts and other incidents promptly (campus video coverage is saved only for up to one week).
    Safety Measures
  • Equip your iPhone, iPad, etc. with GPS location services. These can be helpful in recovering lost or stolen items.
  • Follow Public Safety on Twitter (@hvpublicsafety) for information, traffic updates and emergency announcements.
  • Sign up for our Emergency Notification Systems –   Alertus and NY Alert – our communication tools for emergency notifications.
  • Take advantage of Public Safety’s campus escort service by calling (518)629-7210.
  • Public safety also can unlock cars and provide jump starts – at no charge.
