Adjunct English instructor Sandra Hutchison’s debut novel, The Awful Mess: A Love Story, is available at a special price for the next several days. A sunnier, sexier contemporary take on The Scarlet Letter, The Awful Mess has more than 130 reviews and an average rating of 4.3 stars out of 5 at Amazon, which is not too bad considering that it gets the occasional one-star review for things like taking the Lord’s name in vain.
As a “Kindle Countdown Deal,” the new book is available for 99 cents through Saturday, Jan. 18 and then $1.99 through Tuesday, Jan. 21 before the e-book returns to its usual price of $3.99. It is also available in paperback, which generally costs something between $13.20 and $14.99. (There is also a PG-13 e-book edition for those who dislike sex scenes.)
Hutchison has taught composition at Hudson Valley since the fall of 2009, after an 18-year career in advertising and publishing. Her one-act play, Nude with Bearded Irises, won a Theater Association of New York State (TANYS) “certificate of meritorious achievement in writing” during its performance in October at the Circle Theater Players in Averill Park. (Also winning TANYS nods in that festival: English instructor Bonnie Cook for acting and former English instructor Val Kavanaugh for writing the first-place winner, Agnes’ Birthday.)
Ten percent of proceeds from this novel are donated to Feeding America. If you get the novel at a good price, please consider making a donation of whatever you think it was worth in food to the food pantry here at Hudson Valley Community College. (Former readers, please note that this is a new cover, not a new novel.)
